When you are sitting at one part of the world, and when your firend is sitting at another, and when a situation arises where you need to work together or browse something together, or maybe you need to install a custom made software yourself on your friend’s pc rather than giving him instructions over chat and to hear that he is doing it all wrong.
You could use a remote desktop. But a remote desktop requires a static IP, and if too many pcs are connected to that static IP, getting connected to a particular PC that you want to connect to is not an easy task. And not many operating systems support remote desktop sharing, where the user of the pc and the remote user can share the same desktop and one can watch what the other is doing or do things together.
If you have left something for download at your home PC, and if you are at office, or are travelling, and if you need to check the status of the download, you need the feature that would provide remote access to your desktop at home, and if you have attached your webcam to it, you could possibly find out where you have left your diet pills before you left. Remote desktop is a good idea, but you again will need a static IP. This can get too complex at times.
