The Mind is a bloody Monkey – a tamil proverb.

Posted in General on May 29th, 2009 by Ravi

I remember that by this time last year, my brain was filled with images of Goa. Thanks to a week long trip that I had made there, explored the whole place, and had even made plans to leave Pondicherry and move there. This year, in feb, I had been to Delhi, and I just fell in love with that place, and all images of Goa vanished from my head and were replaced with magnificent Moghul archetecture of Delhi. Delhi, one of the oldest cities of the world. Delhi, Delhi, Delhi.

Where did Goa go? Would Delhi too go away too if I visit Auckland or Wellington in NZ after a few years? What if I manage to move through all fascinating cities in the world in the next 30 years? Where would I go after that?

The mind really is a fucking monkey.

A train from Chennai to Goa

Posted in Consumer Electronics, General on April 19th, 2009 by Ravi

I am a man who has got his permanent residence at Pondicherry, and temporary residences all over the country. Thanks to the system of Serviced Apartments becoming popular across the country, with a day’s notice I can get a place to live for a few days or weeks anywhere in the country with just a few days notice. Since apperating in Harry Potter style and Teleportation for humans are things of the distant past and the distant future, we will have to use the transport systems that are open for general public today. Though in my fantasies I am a smarter wizard than Harry Potter and a better scientist than the head of Cern, Rolf-Dieter Heuer himself, in reality, I am just one among the public, and do not have options to fly in Mach 15 planes or be teleported.

A bus from Chennai to Goa would take 21 hours, and I hate buses. And there is only one train from Chennai to Goa, the MAS-Vasco express. I love planes, but I have a very strict policy on taking planes for non-profitable, expenses filled time out trips to places like Goa.

This January I did justify my flight to Goa as I had plans to make use of the Goan Govt. 50% subsidy to start a hotel. I had a budget of a crore, and with half of that as subsidy from the govt, I could raise 90% of the remaining half in bank loans, and get a personal loan for the remaining 10%. I somehow postponed that idea as Goa became less popular among the tourists after the serial rapes and bomb threats. I can’t pay off the debts if I don’t get business from the hotel.

Well, so now when I think its time for me to visit Goa again and take a chill in the sun, I don’t have a train from anywhere. There is one train from Chennai though, the Madras Vasco express, and it leaves Chennai every friday. Therefore it is fully booked ahead for atleast the next 6 months. Pondicherry is an odd place. It is like a server node standing out at the far end of the router, and Chennai being my router, and I need to go there for a train or a plane to anywhere in the country. Poor at money and poor at eye sight, I don’t have a car, and I hate buses. So I have to take a taxi to go to Chennai every time I want to travel somewhere. So when I go to Chennai, I find that it is not a well connected place either. It only has 1 direct flight to Goa 3 times a week, and that too is full most of the time and needs advanced booking. People say the best way to go to Goa is to go to Bangalore and take a bus from there. As Goa is only 6 hours from bangalore, a bus journey should not be that tiring. Then again, from Pondicherry to Bangalore will be a tough journey.

Given the rush in the Mas-Vasco, Hon’ble Minister of Railways Laalu ji should certainly consider putting a few more compartments on the tracks between Chennai and Goa, or atleast a few more 2 and 3 tier AC coaches above the 2 numbers each available now on the train. Otherwise how could people like me even imagine having a beer in peace at Goa on a weekend or possibly read netbooks in peace??

Bargains are waiting to be found at Flea Markets

Posted in General on April 3rd, 2009 by Ravi

I love to spend hours looking at flea markets for different items. Last time when I was in Goa, I spent around 7 hours at the Anjuna Flea Market. Different vendors set up their products in a central location so that consumers can spend their time walking around and see the new and used items available for sale. You never know what you will come across at a flea market. There are plenty of new and used items as well as home made crafts and clothing to choose from.

To help make your day at the flea market the best it can be plan for the day. Most flea markets are outdoors so you may want some sunscreen and a hat. Others are inside so make sure you find out ahead of time. You don?t want to spend the day carrying around the items you purchased so make sure you take along a bag or a cart. There are some very inexpensive carts that fold up and fit into the trunk of your car.

Make sure you wear good walking shoes too so you won?t have to end your daily early due to tired feet. A good tip to help if you do get tired walking is to walk to the very end of the vendors and work your way forward. This way you will have the heaviest load from items you have purchased when you are nearest your vehicle. Keep in mind that most people start at the entrance of the flea market so if you start at the back you will be able to see many items before too many other people do.

Most flea markets are offered on the weekends but some of them do take place on weekdays as well. The number of other people looking around is generally lower during the week but then so is the number of vendors. It is really a toss up about when is the best time of day to make a deal at a flea market. It is perfectly acceptable to try to get the price lowered down from what the vendor is asking for it.

By going to a flea market first thing in the morning you are likely to be able to take advantage of the selection before everyone else has. This is the best solution if there are particular items you are interested in finding. Yet many people claim they have a harder time getting the seller to negotiate the prices when they purchase early in the morning.

By the end of the day though most vendors are very willing to lower the prices on the items they have remaining. They definitely don?t want to have to pack up any more stuff at the end of the day than they absolutely have to. If you have a particular item in mind and you can wait until the end of the day you will get a better price. You also run the risk of someone else snatching it up though if it is a one of a kind item.

There are different ways to negotiate the price of any given item. You can ask the vendor what the lowest price is that they will take for a given it. You can also offer to pay a certain price and see if they will take you up on the offer. If you want to offer $10 then have that money in your hand for them to see. Seeing the money will often entice them to take the money.

I have found it is always worth my time to look around though because I may find the vendor in the next aisle has the same item for $10 less. If I am going to go back to check on a diet pill with a particular vendor I write down their location because by the end of the day it can be difficult to remember who is located where.

Atlanta 2007

Posted in General on August 23rd, 2008 by Ravi

I wanted to be at Atlanta for 1996 Olympics, and I did want to be there at 2008 Beiging Olympics as well. But since my credit card companies are not allowing me a decent credit limit, I am unable to travel to any of these places. But I did manage to visit Atlanta in 2007, and even managed to get a $11.50 Kennedy space center discount as well.

When you are in the United States, you will find that loads of commercial companies give out packages for Atlanta tours, but just like in looking around Goa, you will find that looking around on your own is the best way to look around a place. But if you are not good for that, you could signup for a tour package always.

When you go some place, you can always depend on online travel guides which you can browse from your phone to find out where you want to go, or atleast how to ask for the nearest toilet. You could also consider signing up for the newsletter by a company called trustedtours.com and get updates once in a while about the things you can see on your tours, and you will find that it will help you plan your next vacation as well. And signing up for the newsletter, you get a chance to win a $150 lucky draw that they are offering to lure in more subscribers to the newsletter.
