How to get a hotel in Goa

Dont book online, or you will end up paying double. Search the internet well before you land there. Take a taxi from the airport and direct the driver to take you to the hotel. Dont let him accompany you to the reception, or the rates will go up again. Leave your luggage in the cab, and walk to the reception and enquire the rates, and you will find that its a lot cheaper than what you might have found while searching on those online reservation sites.

Goa has more hotels than houses, so you never run out of a place to stay, unless you want to be very close to a beach or something. Finding a room at Panaji or Madgaon isn’t that tough. On or off season, you will get decent AC rooms with decent room service for about Rs 600 a day, and the same room will cost you atleast Rs 1000 when you book thru sites like makemytrip.com

You could find a lot of serviced appartments in Goa, and next time I plan to take one instead of a hotel room, and the cost will workout a lot cheaper if you stay there for a few weeks together.

If you ask me, panaji is the best place to be. You can go where ever you want from Panaji, as if you stay at Calangute, it will be a very long drive to Miramar or Dona Paula or Mapusa. Calangute is about 10 Kms from Panaji, and when in Goa, without a jeep or a scooter, you would be wasting your time. It is such a beautiful place to be moving in a Taxi or a bus. Well, atleast I think so as I am a bit of a roadie.

And when you need a jeep, dont ask the hotel people to get it for you as it will cost you the earth. You can get a decent Mahindra 4×4 jeep for abour Rs 800 a day at candolim or a gypsi for about Rs 1000. You should be able to get a Honda Activa for Rs 150, and an avenger or a bullet for about Rs 300 a day. If you book them on weekly or monthly basis, it will cost you even less.

The Loner’s Guide to Goa Part VI

The next monring I woke up quite late. It was around 10 AM, and that is a very unusual time for me to be waking up these days. But the bed was really cozy, there was no noise around adn it was completely quiet, the room was dark with the curtains drawn, and with the phones switched off and being miles away from office, I had nothing to worry about at all. Or atleast, I had a mentality that all worries could wait till I got back home.

There was no wifi in the hotel. The hotel has got 12 rooms, and everyone comes there for relaxing and no one really seems to be using the intenret. So I had to carry the laptop down to the Manager’s office and use his internet for abour an hour every day. And all I had to do was to check mails and check for important isues. I was determined not to pickup any calls, and I had never carried my phone outside my room a single time.

I check the the mails that morning, had a small breakfast and the Honda Activa arrived at around 11 AM. I didnt bother to take a bath since I was expecting to have a good dip at a beach. The receptionist at the hotel was very helpful and he gave me the directions to all the beaches in the Taluk of Bardez, and I first went to Calangute beach, which was the one that I missed to go to Baga.

The beach was huge. Chennai has 3 beachs that are larger than this, and Pondicherry has 3 beaches too, that are relatively good enough. But this is a beach that I have never seen before in my life. Such a crowded beach, full of shacks, parachuites, water scooters and quite a lot of attractions.

I couldnt find parking easily even for the tiny Honda Activa, and finally managed to park somehwere and left everything under the seat, locked it, and inserted the ring of the key into my finger and held it tight, and went straight to the sea. As I walked, people were coming storming at me, canvasing for the parachuite and water scooter rides. I was in no mood for that right now. Besides, I had to find out how it worked as I have never been on them in my life. And I still had 5 days ahead of me. Why hurry and have all the fun in just one day?

Avoiding them, I half walked half ran and dived straight into the sea and swam a little bit and almost got hit by a water scooter. Realizing that it was too deep, I swam back to where I could keep my feet on the sand and safely away from the watermobiles, I played with the waves for some time, always concious about the key thats in my hand. Thats my passport to the hotel, and my wallet with all cash and cards was inside that scooter.

After about an hour, I walked back to the scooter, picked up my wallet, and walked back to the beach and sat down on a shack and ordered a beer. A pint bottle of Fosters, that cost around Rs 50. Thats too much, the same bottle is being sold outside for Rs 20. The shacks are making quite a lot of money this way. And the food was real costly too. So I just ordered a plate of french fries and had a beer, paid the bill of Rs 100, and having dried up considerably by this time, I walked back to the scooter and rode to Baga beach again.
