Ratan Tata Not good at Communications

Tata may be a world leader in steel, automobiles and stuff, but his recent venture of acquirng VSNL from the Govt of India and running that as an ISP in the brand name of Tata Indicom Broadband doesnt seem to be very good. Not at all to the expectations. And his phones suck too. Both the landlines and the mobiles. The compnay mnages to survive since all Tata employees are given a free Tata Indicom phone and made to pay the bills.

I got so pissed off with BSNL that I had to look for a change, and the other ISP that is available in my area is Tata Indicom. If only I had airtel here, it would have been really great. Tata Indicom installed the internet line yesterday at my home. It has a speed of 512 Kbps and is fully unmetered, that means I can download round the clock.

The installation charges is about Rs 1650, and there is a security deposit of Rs 1000. So the initial setup fee is Rs 2650. And the so called Post Paid connection is billed in advance. Meaning we need to pay for the month of May right in the beginning itself, and at the time of exit, we need to give them a month’s notice, meaning they will remove the lines and still bill us for a month. You will not get the deposit money back.

I dont know why Ratan does business this way. No mther ISP works this way. And as for the prepaid plans, you need to buy for atleast 3 months, and if you find the service bad, your money is gone. Once or twice I noticed that the PC is overloaded with too many requests waiting to be sent, and the browsers crashed because of that. I naturally run a lot of browsers on my computer, and when their sessions are restored, naturally when they dont get a reply back for the requests they send, before it declares that the server couldn’t be found, the memory naturally gets overloaded, and particularly when you dont have enough RAM on your CPU, which unfortunately, I dont have as of now, the desktop naturally becomes slower.

And the service is really not upto the mark. The only good ISP network that was there was Airtel Broadband in Pondicherry, and it is not available everywhere. It seems that everywhere in India, airtel is the only proper service provider when it comes to Internet and phones.
