The Loner’s Guide to Goa Part VI

The next monring I woke up quite late. It was around 10 AM, and that is a very unusual time for me to be waking up these days. But the bed was really cozy, there was no noise around adn it was completely quiet, the room was dark with the curtains drawn, and with the phones switched off and being miles away from office, I had nothing to worry about at all. Or atleast, I had a mentality that all worries could wait till I got back home.

There was no wifi in the hotel. The hotel has got 12 rooms, and everyone comes there for relaxing and no one really seems to be using the intenret. So I had to carry the laptop down to the Manager’s office and use his internet for abour an hour every day. And all I had to do was to check mails and check for important isues. I was determined not to pickup any calls, and I had never carried my phone outside my room a single time.

I check the the mails that morning, had a small breakfast and the Honda Activa arrived at around 11 AM. I didnt bother to take a bath since I was expecting to have a good dip at a beach. The receptionist at the hotel was very helpful and he gave me the directions to all the beaches in the Taluk of Bardez, and I first went to Calangute beach, which was the one that I missed to go to Baga.

The beach was huge. Chennai has 3 beachs that are larger than this, and Pondicherry has 3 beaches too, that are relatively good enough. But this is a beach that I have never seen before in my life. Such a crowded beach, full of shacks, parachuites, water scooters and quite a lot of attractions.

I couldnt find parking easily even for the tiny Honda Activa, and finally managed to park somehwere and left everything under the seat, locked it, and inserted the ring of the key into my finger and held it tight, and went straight to the sea. As I walked, people were coming storming at me, canvasing for the parachuite and water scooter rides. I was in no mood for that right now. Besides, I had to find out how it worked as I have never been on them in my life. And I still had 5 days ahead of me. Why hurry and have all the fun in just one day?

Avoiding them, I half walked half ran and dived straight into the sea and swam a little bit and almost got hit by a water scooter. Realizing that it was too deep, I swam back to where I could keep my feet on the sand and safely away from the watermobiles, I played with the waves for some time, always concious about the key thats in my hand. Thats my passport to the hotel, and my wallet with all cash and cards was inside that scooter.

After about an hour, I walked back to the scooter, picked up my wallet, and walked back to the beach and sat down on a shack and ordered a beer. A pint bottle of Fosters, that cost around Rs 50. Thats too much, the same bottle is being sold outside for Rs 20. The shacks are making quite a lot of money this way. And the food was real costly too. So I just ordered a plate of french fries and had a beer, paid the bill of Rs 100, and having dried up considerably by this time, I walked back to the scooter and rode to Baga beach again.

List of Vehicles that are available for rent in Goa

All the vehicles listed below are available for rent everywhere in Goa. A full tank of fuel will be provided, and when you return the vehicle, you need to have it filled up to the top. There are people who might cheat you with the time, so it is best to get the vehicles thru your hotel even if it costs Rs 100 or 200 more. No driver will be provided. Driver might cost extra, but it is pleasurable to drive around Goa on your own. All roads are well marked, and you will never have to ask a guy on the road for directions, and you will never get lost. And even if you get lost, just head west, and you will land in a beach, and from there you can find your way back to where ever you came from.

I managed to ask around for rates for all the vehicles that are available on rent in Goa, and a rough price list is as follows.

    Two Wheelers

1. Honda Activa Rs 150 for 12 hours
2. Kinetic Honda Rs 75 for 12 hours.
3. Duo Rs 125 for 12 hours
4. Yo Bike Rs. 200 for 12 hours.
5. Bajaj Pulsar Rs 200 for 12 hours
6. Bajaj Avenger Rs 250 for 12 hours
7. Yamaha Enticer Rs. 250 for 12 hours.

    Four Wheelers

Hyundai Santro Rs 750 for 8 hours
Maruti Omni Rs 600 for 8 hours
Mahindra Voyager Rs 1200 for 8 hours
Maruti Gypsi Old Rs. 1000 for 12 hours
Maruti Gypsi New Rs 1200 for 12 hours
Mahindra Classic Rs 800 for 24 hours
SUV Rs. 2500 for 8 hours.

For my first day in Goa, I was riding a Honda Activa, got bored with it soon. No pickup and it was highly difficult to drive it for longer distances. So for the 2nd day I took an Avenger, and on the 3rd 4th and 5th days, I just went for a Mahindra Classic, and those 2 days were really rocking. When you are alone on a cool looking yellow jeep, you would find girls in Honda Activas chasing you and other boys who want to stay in the competition. Well, I did make sure that I never came into the competition, as this was not what I had gone to Goa for, though I enjoyed it a little bit, and didn’t want to spoil it for the other boys who couldn’t afford a jeep like me. I was just happy that God has given me the capacity to spend and get a jeep on rent without having to spending hours at the hotel room and working on the budget.
