Today India might have become a technical country wiht a lot of software companies blossoming here and there, and with its loads of call centers and with people having their neutral english accents with which they can talk to people in any english speaking country. But it is not to be forgotten that India is a land of traditions, mysteries and magic. The mistress of spices is one such book, and it has been made into a movie about 2 years ago which I watched last night.

Tilo, one mistress of spice trained by a Mother in India, obviously in Kerala, is sent to a Store in San Fransisco. She has magical powers, can hear to the spices talk and knows what her clients want. She makes people forget the painful pasts, have passionate nights, get relief from tension and finally falls in love with an American though the red chillies warn her that she is in trouble.

The Mother had told her and her fellow mistresses that they should never use the spices for themselves, must never leave the store so that the spices always surround them, and they should not touch another’s skin, and that if they fall for their own desires, the spices will stop talking to them. She picks the spices usually not with her knowledge, but by listening to the spices. The spices tell her whats right for the client in the counter. So when this american touches tilo the spices stop talking to her and she gets into trouble not being able to give her clietns the right kind of spices to save them from trouble. A bus for sale keeps backfiring outside the street once in a while. Do buses backfire in the US? Never seen a bus backfire in India all these years.

Finally she decides the use the spice for once for herself, dresses beautifully, and gets into bed with the american guy. Well, earlier she used to look homely and it made her look really beautiful through out the movie, and her new outlook in the end just made her look like a whore. After the bedding, she comes back to her store and sets herself on fire, and the fire decided that she will not leave the spices and can continue dating that man and continue to be the mistress of spices.

Moral of the story? Bullshit. The author has just wanted to increase the sales of the spices. I have been in India for 27 years now and I have not heard a thing about the magical powers of spices, and having eaten quite a lot of them, I have not really experienced any magical power either.
