The CFL Calculation

Posted in General on June 29th, 2010 by Ravi

I haven’t calculated this earlier, but am going to calculate on this post. Don’t really know what the outcome would be. Here goes.

The terms that I would be using would be easily understood by Indians as I am an Indian. If google brought you here from USA or elsewhere, read on if you must as I am not sure what values apply in your country.

The Tube Light is a tube filled with some florescent vapor and when electrons pass through the tube, the vapor glows. The cost of making this vapor glow is 40 watts of power.

This costs Rs 50 in Pondicherry, a Union territory in India were almost everything is cheap. Power in Pondicherry costs from Rs 0.55 to 1.75 per KWh.

So with a tubelight’s life of 1000 hours,

Time run per KWh = 1000/40 = 25 hours.
(want me to break this down for you? 40 watts = .04 KW, and to get the value for H, you invert .04 and you get 25, so the answer is 25 hours)

Total power consumed in Lifetime of a tube light = 1000 / 25 = 40 KWh.
(1000 hours of lifetime and 25 hours per KWh)

So the total cost of usage of a tube light in Pondicherry for its lifetime is Rs 50 for buying it, and Rs 70 to run it at the cost of Rs 1.75 per KWH for 40 hours, the total comes to Rs 120.

The CFL has a lifetime of 5000 hours. Thats 5 Tubelights, which cost 250 in total at Rs 50 each, and a 22 Watt CFL costs only Rs 200.

Whoa, there were have it, I guess I have the answer. Do your math for the CFL power consumption guys. Yes, I guess CFL is cheaper

Time run per KWh of CFL = 1000/22 = 45.45 hours.

Total power consumed in lifetime = 5000 / 45.45 = 110 KWh

Total cost of power = 110 * 1.75 = Rs. 192.51

Total cost = Rs 192.51 + 200 = 392.51.

Comparing with the Tube Light,

Rs 120 per 1000 hours is Rs 600 per 5000 hours. And CFL comes to about Rs 400 only. Yes, looks like the CFL is a bit cheaper.

The production costs of CFL bulbs should be really low, I am sure these Philips and Wipro guys are making a big bunch of money selling these. These should be available in the markets for Rs 50 as I don’t think the cost making a CFL would be any more than making a Tube light, of course the CFL has a built in choke and starter setup.

So guys, go get CFL, consume less power, save the planet.

By the way, is there a better air conditioner that consumes lesser power as well? As I don’t think saving 22 watts is really going to save the planet while my AC is drawing 2000 watts non stop for about 20 hours a day :p.

Ultra Fancy Outdoor Lighting

Posted in General on August 1st, 2009 by Ravi

I had taken my son out for a walk yesterday. I am a relaxed walker. I never walk fast, and my son likes that. We are never in a hurry, and with me to watch his step, he indulges in looking around at either sides of the road, watches the crazy busses of Pondicherry that pass us, and the homes and the shops that are there.

Yesterday, looks like he was really impressed with a house that had the most sexy outdoor lighting in our neighborhood. He just stood still there, and refused to walk, and I had to carry him till the lighting vanished out of our sights

As a matter of fact, I too was quite impressed with the lighting. They make nights look better than the Day.

The Mind is a bloody Monkey – a tamil proverb.

Posted in General on May 29th, 2009 by Ravi

I remember that by this time last year, my brain was filled with images of Goa. Thanks to a week long trip that I had made there, explored the whole place, and had even made plans to leave Pondicherry and move there. This year, in feb, I had been to Delhi, and I just fell in love with that place, and all images of Goa vanished from my head and were replaced with magnificent Moghul archetecture of Delhi. Delhi, one of the oldest cities of the world. Delhi, Delhi, Delhi.

Where did Goa go? Would Delhi too go away too if I visit Auckland or Wellington in NZ after a few years? What if I manage to move through all fascinating cities in the world in the next 30 years? Where would I go after that?

The mind really is a fucking monkey.

A train from Chennai to Goa

Posted in Consumer Electronics, General on April 19th, 2009 by Ravi

I am a man who has got his permanent residence at Pondicherry, and temporary residences all over the country. Thanks to the system of Serviced Apartments becoming popular across the country, with a day’s notice I can get a place to live for a few days or weeks anywhere in the country with just a few days notice. Since apperating in Harry Potter style and Teleportation for humans are things of the distant past and the distant future, we will have to use the transport systems that are open for general public today. Though in my fantasies I am a smarter wizard than Harry Potter and a better scientist than the head of Cern, Rolf-Dieter Heuer himself, in reality, I am just one among the public, and do not have options to fly in Mach 15 planes or be teleported.

A bus from Chennai to Goa would take 21 hours, and I hate buses. And there is only one train from Chennai to Goa, the MAS-Vasco express. I love planes, but I have a very strict policy on taking planes for non-profitable, expenses filled time out trips to places like Goa.

This January I did justify my flight to Goa as I had plans to make use of the Goan Govt. 50% subsidy to start a hotel. I had a budget of a crore, and with half of that as subsidy from the govt, I could raise 90% of the remaining half in bank loans, and get a personal loan for the remaining 10%. I somehow postponed that idea as Goa became less popular among the tourists after the serial rapes and bomb threats. I can’t pay off the debts if I don’t get business from the hotel.

Well, so now when I think its time for me to visit Goa again and take a chill in the sun, I don’t have a train from anywhere. There is one train from Chennai though, the Madras Vasco express, and it leaves Chennai every friday. Therefore it is fully booked ahead for atleast the next 6 months. Pondicherry is an odd place. It is like a server node standing out at the far end of the router, and Chennai being my router, and I need to go there for a train or a plane to anywhere in the country. Poor at money and poor at eye sight, I don’t have a car, and I hate buses. So I have to take a taxi to go to Chennai every time I want to travel somewhere. So when I go to Chennai, I find that it is not a well connected place either. It only has 1 direct flight to Goa 3 times a week, and that too is full most of the time and needs advanced booking. People say the best way to go to Goa is to go to Bangalore and take a bus from there. As Goa is only 6 hours from bangalore, a bus journey should not be that tiring. Then again, from Pondicherry to Bangalore will be a tough journey.

Given the rush in the Mas-Vasco, Hon’ble Minister of Railways Laalu ji should certainly consider putting a few more compartments on the tracks between Chennai and Goa, or atleast a few more 2 and 3 tier AC coaches above the 2 numbers each available now on the train. Otherwise how could people like me even imagine having a beer in peace at Goa on a weekend or possibly read netbooks in peace??

French is cool

Posted in General on September 22nd, 2008 by Ravi

I have been in Pondicherry for quite some time now, and I have missed all the oppertunities that have come my way to learn French. But I already speak 4 languages and I am not very keen on knowing another one. So I am pretty sure that I will be letting go any other oppertunity that I might get as well.

Yesterday when I was watching TV, I was shocked to learn that Chandrika Kumaratunga took her universiry course in Paris and speaks french fluently, and she speaks English quite well too.

Would that make me learn French? Well, the French President is a bigger guy, and he too speaks French, so why should I care of Chandrika Kumaratunga speaks French or not?

As long as I have google translator and have a computer on my desk with enough computer memory, I wouldn’t want to bug up my brain in learning a new language.
