I have just finished installing CentOS 5 on my PC ,next i am going to test Xen Virtualization on my new CentOS 5 machine. When doing a fresh install of CentOS 5, you can specify if Xen should be installed by selecting Xen in the base Group installer. But I missed selecting Xen software and tools during my CentOS 5 installation, not a big deal i don’t have to reinstall CentOS 5 just because i missed selecting Xen packages, I can install Xen software and tools later on. Xen is the open source Virtualization environment available for Linux kernel only that means Xen cannot run on windows platform. I have installed Xen latest release 3.1 on my CentOS 5 machine. Xen allows you to install “virtual servers” on your base operating system. Xen allows you to create and run several instances of any Linux utilizing your single server hardware resources. Here is my attempt to document step by step instructions for installing Xen on CentOS: 1. Xen installation Preparation in CentOS 5: First check on your CentOS 5 machine if you have Xen installed: xenserver# rpm -qa |grep xen xen-libs-3.1.0-13.el5 xen-3.1.0-13.el5 xenserver #rpm -qa |grep kernel-xen kernel-xen-2.6.21-2950.el5 If you have Continue Reading

Vivekananda or someone said about a hundred years ago that the more you learn the more you discover your ignorance. I am just in the beginning stages of discovering how ignorant I have been. Well, there have been errors that I have never come across in the past, and maybe it was because I was busy selling hosting to meet my commitments. Only after I have sold Indyahozting I find myself to be learning a lot of things about linux. And ubunut is helping me a lot in it. I have installed ubuntu on my computer only for the great usage of gnome, It is nearly 2 years since I have started using ubuntu, and I have not found one better distro that would let me use my computer to the fullest extent. Not fedora, not gentoo not anything else. The RPM based distros are only good for the servers and not for desktops. Yesterday on a friend’s server, the mails were not going out, and he had asked me to look into it. Adn this was the error that I had got. 209.172.41.200. I checked the resolver at /etc/resolv.conf and it showed the right nameserver IPs. Then I did Continue Reading

Improving the fuel economy of your automobile

Talking about automobiles, how do you improve the fuel economy of your car or bike? Whenever you visit a showroom to buy a car, the salesman will tell you a mileage that will be far higher than the actual mileage that any car would give you. When you go back to the showroom and ask him about the difference, naturally, like all of us would be familiar by now, they will just say that the car would give that mileage on average testing conditions. So to understand fuel economy better, we need to know what the standard testing conditions are. A car driven on a smooth, straight and level road at a constant speed, accelerating gradually, shifting gears at speeds and engine rpm as specified in the manual, never breaking and never exceeding 50 MPH at any time and not even fluctuating is supposed to be the standard testing conditions of any vehicle. To add more details to it, to reduce friction, all joints should be greased and lubricated well, the car shouldn’t weigh a lot, loaded with people and their luggage, tyre pressure should be optimum, and the air filter and the engine lubricant should all be clean and Continue Reading
