Camcorders are available cheap these days. Even my phone has got a video camera that shoots quite well. But I am never interested in videos. Nothing obsesses me like capturing a moment with a still camera. SLRs are my favorite. These days there are cameras that show you what the lens sees with lcd displays, but I still would like to do it the old fashioned ways. Nikon they say is the best, but I have a certain bit of attachment towards Canon camera. SLR cameras are hard to maintain though. Cleaning it is hard work. And protecting the lens from fungus and moisture is even harder work. I did have a Vivitar SLR camera, and that was completely wasted when I had locked it up for a few months at a streatch.

A friend of mine had been to Singapore lately, and when he had come back he was telling me about the city for about 4 hours at a streatch. I unfortunately have never been there. All that I know about it is what I have seen in the movies and in Discovery Travel and Living channel. A city with an excellent metro rail and bus transport system. Shops marked with exit signs in the right places at all shops, tall buildings everywhere. A well planned city, apartment buildings demolished every 99 years. No house is sold. All homes belong to the government but are given on lease to the citizens and PR holders. Honest policemen, lots of party, lots of fun and real hard work with lots of money. In short, it is the perfect place to be. No terrorist attacks, no rogues and an ideal place for everyone. From what I have heard, it is a great country to live in.

I have been using the same modem for about a year now, and for the past few days since I got my unlimited data transfer internet connection, I am surprised at the work that it is doing. Im downloading all sorts of stuff, and my computer is plugged to a 2 hour backup power supply as well, and Pondicherry not being a very bad place wehre power goes down for over 2 hours at a streatch, the computer and the modem have literally been running for over 2 months at a streatch now since july 1st when my plan changed to unlimited 512 kbps from 2 Mbps limited. If you are outside India, you might laugh at this cos probably you might be on a 10 Mbps connection while reading this, but in India owning a 512 Kbps connection is like owning a Rolls Royce. I sit before this computer for about 6 hours a day, and therefore the AC runs here for 6 hours a day, and for the remaining 18 hours, the door is locked, and so are all windows, and the heat is almost unbearable when I enter the room in the evening after office. No AC, Continue Reading

Unfortunately enough for me, I have never been able to connect to a better broadband from my home in Pondicherry than a BSNL connection. The operators who are available in my area are SIFY, Tata Indicom and BSNL, out of which BSNL is the best. The other two are even worse. Sify goes down very often, and when you call their helpline, they just tell you that the problem will be fixed in 24 to 48 hours, and when your line goes down for 15 times a month, you will be left for a month without internet. TATA is horrible. I have written a lot about my experiences with them at the office and at home. So all that I am left with is BSNL. The only good ISP in Pondihcerry is Airtel, and out of sheer bad luck, they dont operate in my area of residence, and at the office. The first office that I had taken in Pondicherry was in an area where Airtel served, and I was quite happy wiht the service, but now, I am stuck to BSNL. What is so bad about bsnl? Well, there is absolutely no customer service to start with, though the Continue Reading

Linux, especially ubuntu, is the best operating system that you could install in your computers at your office if you are running a hosting company. No point in getting Windows, paying for the license, getting bugged, and get it resulted in a weak server maintenance or admin work done. For Windows servers, naturally, you use the remote desktop. Use the terminal services client, enter your servers IP, and a window opens asking for the username and password, enter that and you are logged into the remote desktop of your windows server. Do you find it not as good as the remote desktop client on your windows PC? Here we go. Terminal services Clinet is a lot stable than windows remote desktop client. It never gets hanged, or refuses to come out of the remote desktop, leaving you in the middle, and forcing you to log out of the administrator and cancelling all your running applications on the server. You can always close the window to exit and log back in to the same session. Yes, windows remote desktop client is designed to do the same too, but it doesnt work very well. I have seen that myself. And to connect Continue Reading
